Overland forage oats proven for hay production

In this article

“Best crop of oaten hay I have produced.”

That’s how Michael Perkins sums up his experience with Overland forage oats on his 260ha property in North West Tasmania.

After years of running one of Tasmania’s top-performing dairy herds, the Perkins family are now transitioning into a mixed farming operation with a stronger focus on beef production. As part of that shift, Michael and his son Brett sowed a paddock of Overland forage oats in October 2025, after cultivating the paddock, and the results exceeded expectations.

Putting overland to the test

“It was the best crop we have grown, even putting the baler under pressure. It produced  23.25 5ft round bales/ha and is now stored ready for feeding out at a later stage,” Michael says.

For a family preparing for a new beef enterprise, feed quality and quantity matter. Overland delivered both.

“We always love seeing the springers tuck into the oaten hay, along with quality pasture, and this looks very good with a high level of grain in the oaten hay sample,” he explains.

Built for forage performance

As a mid-late maturing forage oat, Overland delivers high tiller density and wide leaf growth. This makes it well suited to autumn sown forage oats programs targeting late season forage yield, particularly in high rainfall and temperate regions.

With hay in the shed and a new enterprise taking shape, Michael and Brett are now looking at their pasture options to complement the beef transition – and are excited about what’s available through AlfaGen Seeds.

For them, Overland has proven itself where it counts: in the paddock, at baling, and in the feed test.
