Winter forage trial site

Located near Griffith in the NSW slopes and plains region, this trial evaluates 54 forage varieties alongside 24 forage blends, comprising 21 different varieties, to identify the best options for boosting winter grazing and spring silage production.

About this site

Many cropping and mixed-cropping farmers in the Riverina region are moving to more livestock in their farm systems and want to know the best forage options to plant in autumn. The site is ideally located to help answer these questions.

What we’re trialling:

Forage cereals – oats, barley, wheat
Forage brassicas – forage rape, canola, forage rape breeding lines
Ryegrasses – annual and Italian ryegrass
Pasture legumes for low rainfall climates
Lucerne varieties
Blends of these species
Perennial dryland grass species – tall fescue, phalaris, cocksfoot
