Rebound millet delivers on the Mid North Coast

In this article

Leo Cleary from Hastings Park Dairy, on the Mid North Coast, was searching for a summer forage crop that could pull double duty – keeping his livestock fed and giving him the flexibility to make silage when needed.

After connecting through Norco Wauchope, AlfaGen Territory Manager Dan Sweeney made the trip out Hastings Park Dairy after Leo decided to give Rebound millet a go.

Grazing and silage with Rebound millet

Rebound forage millet is a reliable summer option if you’re looking for quick feed production. Delivering rapid growth through hot Aussie conditions, Rebound is fast-growing, reliable, and tough enough to handle whatever the season throws at it.

Leo had been running forage sorghum, but fall armyworm had been giving him headaches. While fall armyworm did show up in the Rebound millet, Leo noticed the numbers were noticeably lower than what he’d been dealing with in his sorghum.

The 44ha paddock had previously been under ryegrass and was well-fertilised before being sprayed out and prepared for the summer crop. Leo gave it a 25mm pre-water before sowing, planted Rebound on 8 December 2025 at 25kg/ha with 100kg/ha of DAP, and used a direct drill with press wheels for establishment. He also rolled the paddock after sowing to make sure he was getting the best possible seed-to-soil contact.

“The Rebound millet benefits from the pre-water irrigation and rolling the paddock after sowing.”

Leo was impressed with Rebound’s speed. The crop was quick to first grazing, and the turnaround to the second grazing came around faster than expected. With urea applied after each graze and consistent irrigation throughout (160mm across seven applications, plus 81mm of rainfall), the crop kept performing.

Leo also took the opportunity to produce Rebound millet silage, yielding 5,369kg DM/ha, before the paddock went back into the grazing rotation.

Leo’s already planning to keep Rebound forage millet as a regular fixture in his dairy rotation.

“I was amazed at how fast the Rebound was able to produce quality feed.”
