FlexiGraze® delivers high-quality hay from fewer cuts

Southern QLD farmer, Amanda Cover, was after a crop that could deliver plenty of feed while making the most of the growing season. Looking to maximise forage yield for hay production under irrigation, Amanda decided to trial FlexiGraze® forage sorghum following the recommendation of her local rural store. 

FlexiGraze® was planted across 8ha on one half of a pivot on 14 October 2025, at 15kg/ha, with 150kg/ha of Granulock AM applied at planting. Supplementary irrigation was used throughout the season as needed to maintain growth.

The first cut on 2 February 2026, produced 90 large square bales (8×4×3ft), averaging 550kg per bale. After applying 120kg/ha of urea, the second cut on 14 April produced another 90 bales of the same average weight. 

The FlexiGraze® paddock received around 230mm of rain during March, on top of supplementary irrigation, including challenging waterlogged conditions across the low-lying black soil areas of the pivot. Despite this, the crop continued its strong performance.

Even after two highly productive cuts, the crop continued to perform, with a final cut expected to yield about 20 extra bales. 

FlexiGraze® is an ultra-late flowering sorghum × Sudan × Sudan hybrid, designed to give you flexibility around both hay production and grazing. Its photoperiod sensitivity extends the growing period before flowering, helping the crop hold quality later into the season.

Its fine stems and high leaf-to-stem ratio mean more leaf, less waste for high quality hay and high dry matter yields, while strong regrowth and recovery after cutting help maximise production across multiple cuts.

For Amanda, the difference was clear when compared with the SSS forage sorghum grown on the same pivot the previous season.

The result was a high-yielding, resilient forage crop that exceeded expectations, demonstrating excellent regrowth, strong recovery after cutting, and the ability to maintain production under some challenging seasonal conditions.
